Minnesota Driving 2011, Day 6

July 31,2011, Saturday

T002he morning started out with a deep blue sky in west and high humidity.  A storm was on its way.    Very typical Minnesota.  We did a lot of visiting and laughing with the grand kids as they played in the water.  The storm ended up being only rain here but tornado and high winds east of us.

We headed to Zorba’s restaurant Perham in the evening and had pizza and nachos’ in huge amounts.  We headed home and Libby and I headed out fishing for the first time in the evening.  No fish at all.

Hit the sack about 10 pm and its supposed to be getting really hot the next couple of days.  Church tomorrow.

cabins2July 29, 2011, Friday

Moving In Day, New Babies, Dad and Mom, Pontoon Boat.

We are nearly moved into our cabin, #2, and it is a warm, 85 degrees and 70% humidity.  Not high desert weather.  Dad and Mom arrived with sister Connie and they look great.

We did a lot of visiting, saw the new babies ben simonthat we had not seen in the last year and saw how much the other kids have grown.   Grandpa and Grandma, my parents, look great and we enjoyed visiting and laughing at the antics of the little ones.

connieWe took an afternoon nap and then had Mike Grussing and his family move into the cabin.  He brought a big pontoon boat that we all took a ride on in the evening. Two more families to move in this weekend.  We expect 36 people to feed Libby’s famous taco’s on Tuesday.

Move in day over and about bed time.

Made it to Minnesota

We arrived in Perham, Minnesota at 2 p.m..  Libby got sick last night not too long after we ate.  She was pretty miserable last night and slept most of the way from Bismarck to Perham.  She is better now.

She missed the flooded area in eastern North Dakota.  Never saw North Dakota so green in the last week in July.  Quite a change from the California high desert.

We stopped over to the lake and said hi to the family that is there and then got a bite to eat.  We head to the lake tomorrow.

Driving Minnesota, 2011 – Day 1

mel desertWe woke up about 0520 and noticed it was still 80 outside with lots of humidity and clouds!  We packed up the car, headed off to Wal-Mart for ice and a light McD’s breakfast.  We pulled on the 14 freeway at 0704.  We pulled off the 15 freeway four states later in Fillmore, Utah at 1800 and 514 miles later.

Filled the car up with gas twice.  The Home to Vegas run was 33.6 mpg and the Vegas to Fillmore was 29.2 mpg.  The last run was over 5 mountain passes with the highest being 6800 feet.  It was 104 in Vegas and 108 in Mesquite, NV and 78 when we arrived in Fillmore.  Hit light rain a couple of times.

lib fillmoreravensWe stopped several times after 2 hours on the road.  One was at the rest stop in the California Desert.  It was hot and there were 4 pairs of ravens who lived off the garbage cans.  They looked healthy.

Hey guess what we saw for the first time in our lives? Nearly every billboard in Nevada has added a solar panel for lights at night. Great idea.

We stopped for lunch in St George, Utah at the Cracker Barrel.  Mmmm,fillmore3 Beef Stew and corn bread, our favorite.  We then stopped in Cedar City, Utah and bought fried chicken, potato salad, and fruit for our picnic dinner in the Fillmore.

Now a shower and shave and to bed early.  Want to be out of here by 630 tomorrow.
