Travel: The Great Educator

As I look back on all the travel we have done in our life time, it is clear that I cannot think of any thing that has provided more of an education to us.

One of the key trips that we every took was to London with our kids.  They were High School/Jr High School age and it was their first time out of the United States.  We rented a flat in the heart of London and we have so many memories of the things that we did and learned.  In fact, after a few days in London, they were able to take off on their own on the “tube” and explore London.  They learned from that trip that they were capable of traveling anywhere they wanted.  And boy have they taken advantage of that as adults.

SAM_0357Our last trip a few months ago was to France.  It was one of the greatest trips we had as the people treated us so well and we learned so much.  Our trip to the Normandy Beaches to see how much our troops gave up in the second world war was very emotional.

louve lib 3When the Islamic terrorists went on their murderous rampage in Paris, it was especially painful for us as both shootouts were within walking distances from where we stayed or visited.  The French people watched their police fight and die to protect them and now look in wonder at the anti-police marches in the US.

So much about travel is perception.  We dressed like the French, learned some of their language, treated them with respect.  They responded in kind.  We saw a few Americans in France with backpacks, treating the locals with disrespect and they were not treated like we were.  Perception:  Missed a huge opportunity the other day to 20150114_123854have the people of Europe perceive that the United States support them in the fight against the Islamic terrorists.

Our visit from family this week was a joy.  That family is a great traveling group.  Good planners, not afraid to try new things even driving the infamous LA freeway at night in their rental car.  I love the pictures where their kids were enjoying the sunset over the Pacific ocean and the visit to the SoCal mountains.  A trip that will help educate them in a positive way for the rest of their life.

Travel:  The great educator.

Poland/Switzerland 2012-Final Day

poland switzerland 2012 005I am composing this on the final flight…London to Los Angeles…and according to the map we are above Hudson Bay in Canada and have 5 hours and 30 minutes left before we land.  Libby and I have dozed on an off the last few hours as the flight so far has been very smooth.

Looking back, we had 8 flights on this trip;  1.  LA to London, 2. London to Warsaw, 3. Warsaw to Amsterdam, 4.  Amsterdam to Geneva, 5.  Geneva to Amsterdam, 6.  Amsterdam to Warsaw, 7.  Warsaw to London, and finally 8.  London to LA.  Quite a trip.  None of them was comfortable either, with the first flight LA to London on British Air leading the worst of all flights.  No leg or seat room at all.  Flying coach now days is much worse than a Grey Hound bus.  Enough complaining.

We got up at 4:45 am this morning and Risa took us to the airport.  Nopoland switzerland 2012 018 problems except we had a very short time between flights at London.  Made it but we had to move very fast.

If we make it to LA early as the pilot says we will, we might make it on the Airport express at 3 pm instead of 5:30 pm.  Please, please, please!!!!

I have a cold that I got in one of flights back from Switzerland.  My ears completely plugged up upon landing in London.  Libby thinks she is getting it now.  We are taking ZiCam spray in hopes it decreases the severity and length of the cold.  We will see.

Finally, beside the flights and colds, our 11th trip to Europe was great!  Especially seeing the family and touring one of the most beautiful countries in the world;  Switzerland.  It will be good to get home though.  Less than 5 hours to LA.

We are home.  Been up 23 hours.  Ready for bed.

Poland/Switzerland 2012, Day 2 -Terrible Flight!

We flew British Air coach and were in the “cattle car” section.  The seats were so close together that my knees touched the seat ahead of me and I and 5’10”.  Little or no padding in the seats.  The service on the flight was good and the food was airline quality level.

Libby and I got little or no sleep.  We hit approximately 2 hours of turbulence in the 9 1/2 hours in the air.  The worst was when dinner was served.  I had no dinner but Libby did well.

I am now writing this in the terminal 3 of Heathrow airport in London.  It is cool and raining hard here.  Enough as we have a 4 hour layover for our flight to Warsaw.  More later.

We left London about 30 minutes late but made up the time on the way to Warsaw.  Marisa and Alex were waiting for us at the airport and it was sunny and 60 degrees.  I slept nearly all the way to Warsaw.

Marisa made some chili.  mmm that was good.  Alex is big!!!!
